Data Migration

For a successful data migration project you need highly skilled data migration analysts, an experienced data migration lead, the right methodology and adaptable technology.

planning

Migration Workshop

Devising a migration strategy and getting full business buy in is important to start a project.

Strategy

What type of data migration is going to be the most appropriate for your project? Department by department e.g. projects then finance or static data and balances then transactions.

Scope

What data volume is expected? How many records? Which entities have the most data to be migrated? Is transactional history required or are balances all that is required?

Roles and Responsibilities

Who is the solution architect? Who will perform the sign off on the data migration? What responsibilities do the SI, the data migration team and the client have throughout the project.

implementation

Data Preparation

In a data migration project, failing to plan really is planning to fail!

Mapping

You need to know your source and destination, tables and columns down to the data types and lengths.

Cleansing

Source data needs to be analysed and updated at source if possible. You can also translate in process.

Know your numbers

You need to know how many entities there are and  the counts for each of the entities you need to migrate.

Data Reconciliation

Reconciliation is an extremely vital step to make sure that every DM cycle has accurately migrated the data that is in scope of your migration project.

Missing Records

Record counts are one of the easiest checks to complete. 437 invoice records in the source system should be 437 invoice records in the destination system. Any difference higher than 0 indicates an issue in your migration process.

Balance Totals

For financial migrations, things needs to add up. Balances, nominal codes, activity line values all need to be checked to make sure that pre migration and post migration values are equal and without discrepancies.

Compliance

There are legal requirements to make sure that any data migration ensures that any flags in tables are replicated from source to destination.

SIgn Off

All migrated data should be signed off by the business that owns the data and not the data migration team. Do not mark your own homework!

Successful Projects

Moving from one application to another requires a data migration. Getting it right first time is imperative to keeping costs down.

Preparation

To run a successful data  migration project you need a tried and tested data migration methodology

Attention to Detail

You need skilled data migration analysts and a data migration lead with experience in similar ERP, Finance or CRM migrations.

Timeline

Large projects require more DM cycles which take longer. Rushing a project is not recommended nor is skipping any steps.
